This beautifully illustrated book, designed for 7 to 11-year-olds is full of interesting facts. My favourite facts are that baby whales are the biggest babies on the planet, at up to 8m (26 feet) long when born, and that the tongue of the blue whale can weigh as much as an elephant!

Talking of big fish, the book tackles the issue of the big fish in the story of Jonah and the communicating snake in Genesis 3. The comments on both of these challenging stories leaves room for a variety of readings of what might or might not have happened. Helpfully the author prompts us to leave open the possibility that the God who created everything could create a sea creature suitable for accommodating a runaway prophet.

The fun facts about Bible animals are accompanied by brief reflections on key biblical passages that speak about those animals. Children of all ages will enjoy flicking through this book. There is much here to teach and delight, and more than enough to persuade the reader that:

“Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them.”
